ISO Companies for high school work experience placement

Can you help find a work experience placement for a Burnaby North Secondary high school student?

My son just started high school at Burnaby North Secondary and we got an email from the Career Education Department asking for volunteer opportunities for the Grade 11/12 students. If your organization can provide any placement opportunities for a budding high school student, please get in touch with Keith Montgomery at keith.montgomery@burnabyschools.ca

Here is the email we got from them:

Dear Parents & Guardians,

I’m reaching out to our parent community in the hope that through our collective efforts we can add a few work experience employers to our list of options for students in Grades 11 and 12. Even if you could only provide a single placement opportunity (online or on site) once this school year, it would make a difference.

If through your own employment, self employment, or personal contacts you believe you could offer one of our students (yes, it can be your own Grade 11/12 child) a volunteer opportunity, please send us an email and we can discuss the details. Ideally we’re looking to provide 30-40 hours for each student but this is flexible. Schedules can also be customized to suit your requirements.

The new quarter-system schedule means it is next to impossible for a student to miss a Monday-Friday for work experience because this would entail missing 11 hours of a single class. Add in CoVid restrictions and finding work experience placements has become very challenging.

Our goal is to place students on weekends, Christmas, Spring Break, or Summer 2021. Another option is for students to do a “virtual” work experience where they can complete online tasks from home and submit them to an employer. e.g. data management or customer phone calls.

To allay fears, I would like to point out that contrary to media stories, our students take social distancing and CoVid precautions seriously. My personal observations suggest near 100% compliance with students wearing masks at school.

Regards,

Keith Montgomery, Marc Carey, Chris Archibald
